Review: Paranormalcy By: Kiersten White

Title: Paranormalcy
Author: Kiersten White
Publisher: HarperTeen, 352 Pages (August 31st 2010)
From: the Publisher, Thank You!

Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old Evie's job is bagging and tagging paranormals. Possessing the strange ability to see through their glamours, she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency. But when someone--or something--starts taking out the vamps, werewolves, and other odd beasties she's worked hard to help become productive members of society, she's got to figure it out before they all disappear and the world becomes utterly normal.

Normal is so overrated.

Review: 4 Stars - Newcomer Kiersten White has struck gold with the first book in her new series – Paranormalcy. With her winning combination of amazingly unique and swoonable characters, fresh take on the paranormal and a story that’ll make any reader say “Oh Bleep”, White has written what is soon to be a huge hit with all and will have everyone begging for more.

Evie, she’s not your average teenager girl, not by a long shot. She’s quirky, strong and 100% girlie-girl, but that’s not all. She’s a key ingredient to the everyday workings of the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA). She was recruited when she was younger for her wacky ability to be able to see past the glamour’s of all the other creatures out there. Kind of helpful when you work for an agency that are all about tagging and registering all the paranormals of the world. I have to say, she’s one of the best female characters I’ve read in a long time – she had that normal, girl next door feel to her with a twist.

Then there’s Lend, let me think what to say about him while I swoon. He’s so far from most boys within the Paranormal YA genre. He’s sweet, kind, interesting, and caring, which was such a nice change for me as a reader. The interaction between Evie and Lend was often funny and extremely entertaining to read. I liked how they acted their age and were youthful in their personalities and relationship, which we don’t see to often, and talk about refreshing!

Evie has many issues to deal with throughout the book – including an ex-boyfriend who just happens to be a faerie. Reth was creepy and added another layer to who Evie was as a character. Not knowing what his plans were until almost the end of the book was perfect. Another character I think needs mentioning is Evie’s best friend Lish. She’s a mermaid and can only speak via a computer which gives us many extremely entertaining conversations between the two. Lish as a character was a gem.

The good and evil elements within the story worked well because of the writing. White added just enough mystery to her supernatural creatures and her lore to make it all her own. What more can I say about Paranormalcy and it’s author other then I’m hooked, can’t wait for the next book – Supernaturally (Summer, 2011) - and to see just what White has up her sleeve for Evie and all the other characters next.
